SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A West High School student who arrived at school with a gun on Thursday was quickly taken into custody and transported to a juvenile detention center.

Yándary Chatwin, spokeswoman for the Salt Lake City School District, said the student was a 9th grader. She did not know the teen’s gender.

“A student informed the staff, and they were able to act quickly,” Chatwin said. “The students were not in imminent danger.”

Chatwin said the staff was able to handle everything so quickly because the student was brave enough to come forward.

“Another student shared the information,” she said. “It’s important to mention it when you see a potential danger. It can make all the difference.”

The student later claimed he was holding a gun for a friend, officials said. The school’s principal sent an email to parents later Thursday to let them know that it didn’t appear the boy intended to harm any other students.
