Man extricated, in critical condition, after 2-vehicle crash in Millcreek

MILLCREEK, Utah, Dec. 7, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — An 84-year-old man had to be extricated from his Toyota van Wednesday evening after he reportedly ran a stop sign and was broadsided by a Chevy pickup truck in Millcreek.

Lt. Dan McConkey of Unified Police Department said the crash happened at about 9:30 p.m. at the intersection of Highland Drive and Elgin Avenue (1335 E. 3015 South). The vehicles collided just outside the Del Taco at 3010 Highland Drive.

McConkey said it appears the van was headed westbound on Elgin Avenue, ran the stop sign and was then broadsided by the truck, which was headed northbound on Highland Drive. McConkey said it’s not yet clear why the van ran the stop sign.

The man who was pinned in his van until extrication was transported by ground ambulance to the University of Utah Hospital in critical condition.

Four people — a man, a woman and two girls, ages 12 and 6 — were in the truck, and none of them was injured. The occupants of the truck transported themselves to the hospital as a precautionary measure.

The Salt Lake City Fire Department joined UPD to assist with the extrication.

Drivers are being advised to avoid the area until at least 11:30 p.m., as accident investigators are on the scene.
