Suspect identified in Orem shooting of brother

Arthur Freek

OREM, Utah, July 21, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Orem police have identified 60-year-old Arthur Freek as the man arrested Thursday in the shooting of his brother, 53, who remains hospitalized in critical condition.

Freek faces charges of attempted murder and domestic violence in the presence of a child. He is the only suspect in the case, said Lt. Craig Martinez, Orem Police Department.

Martinez said Freek’s younger brother was shot once in the chest during an altercation, which happened at about 1:30 p.m. Thursday at a home near 515 E. 1834 South.

The elder Freek initially declined to leave the house he was in, but officers talked to him and got him to surrender within about 20 minutes, Martinez said. A handgun recovered is believed to be the weapon that was used in the shooting.

On Thursday afternoon, family members were being questioned about what may have led to the shooting.

Gephardt Daily will have more information as it becomes available.
