Suspect in custody after standoff in Taylorsville

TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Dec. 14, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A suspected burglar who tried to evade police, then broke into a Taylorsville residence to hide, has been taken into custody after a standoff.

According to information from the Unified Police Department posted at 2:54 p.m., UPD officers responded to a call of a burglary in process on Thursday afternoon.

When officers arrived, a man fled through yards and broke into an empty house at 5664 S. Bree St., the tweet said.

Surrounding houses were evacuated.

Just before 4 p.m., the UPD tweeted the “Suspect has been taken safely into custody.”

The suspect was later identified as James Schmidt, 21. A UPD tweet said a K-9 was used to take the suspect into custody.

“He will be charged with multiple counts of burglary, resisting arrest, and fleeing,” the tweet said.
