Suspected shoplifter brandishes firearm in West Valley Shopko

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Aug. 11, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are looking for a would-be shoplifter who brandished a weapon when store personnel tried to detain him.

West Valley City Police Sgt. Jay Horner said the incident happened at about 6 p.m. Friday at Shopko, 4850 W. 3500 South.

The suspect, a man in his early 30s, was attempting to steal an item or items and was stopped by a store employee. Horner said the suspect then brandished a firearm and fled the scene. No one was injured in the incident.

Officers set up a containment area but were unable to locate the suspect.

The investigation is still in the very early stages, Horner said, and after police have checked surveillance video, they may release a photo of the suspect.

He is described as a white man, early 30s, wearing a black jacket, black hat, and black sunglasses. He also has lip piercings.
