Update: Police ID victim of fatal stabbing, relative booked for homicide in Salt Lake City

SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Jan. 29, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified the victim of a fatal stabbing that occurred Saturday in Salt Lake City, and the man booked for the murder, the dead man’s stepson.

The victim, who died at the scene, has been identified as Johnny Postlethwait, 54, the Salt Lake City Police Department said in a news release Monday morning. Officers booked Postlethwait’s stepson Charles A. Petrie, 30, into jail for murder.

Police said Postlethwait was stabbed after a verbal and physical altercation with Petrie.

Officials were summoned to the scene, at 756 E. 1700 South, at 12:58 p.m., said SLCPD Lt. Victor Siebeneck.

“The man was found to be deceased when we arrived, or shortly thereafter,” Siebeneck told Gephardt Daily. “His son was taken into custody.”

Other family members were in the residence when the stabbing occurred, including a 5-year-old girl.

Everyone who may have seen anything is being interviewed, Siebeneck said.
