Fourth graders in South Jordan brought several golden retriever puppies into a House Committee room on Capitol Hill Wednesday in hopes that their request to make these adorable furry friends the official state pet would come to fruition.

After doing research as a class, the fourth graders found that the breed was Utah’s most popular pet and came prepared to present the House Committee with a list of reasons why the golden retriever should be given some notoriety.

Though some state officials felt that there were more pressing issues to tend to, many seemed to enjoy sponsoring the bill and working with the students.

Even though this issue will not have a significant impact on the the future of Utah, allowing these youth to be involved in this process could have an impact on them for years.

The bill passed the Senate Government Operations and Political Subdivisions Committee with a 3-1 vote, and will now be presented to the full senate in hopes of making the golden retriever the state “domestic animal.”
