HERRIMAN, Utah (Gephardt Daily) — A woman was shot in the hand and foot early Sunday morning in her Herriman home in an alleged domestic dispute.

Unified Police Lt. Lex Bell said officers were called by hospital staff members just after 5 a.m. saying a woman in her 30s had come in for treatment of a gunshot wound.

She said she had accidentally discharged a gun and shot herself, but a person who was with her told them that was most likely not true.

“The suspicion behind her story is what prompted officers to respond to her home  on Quiet Shade Drive,” Bell said. “When officers arrived they found several people were still at the home.

“They found the suspect inside the home who had been beaten to a state of unconsciousness. Our officers called for medical, who were able to revive him. It doesn’t appear his injuries were too severe.”

Witnesses at the scene said there had been an all-night party at the house, and the suspect got upset, brought out a gun and told everyone to get out of the house.

“As witnesses were walking to their cars, they heard a gunshot that prompted them to return to the home,” Bell said. “What happened after that we are still unsure of.”

Bell said the most probable explanation is that as the victim grabbed the gun, it went off, and the bullet traveled through her hand and into her ankle. Detectives did not immediately not have the details to validate that as a possibility, Bell said.

The entire incident, both the shooting and the assault on the suspect are still under investigation. Anyone who was either at the party or has any information relevant to this incident to call Unified Police at 801-743-7000.
