Health officials have confirmed that a Zion National Park employee was diagnosed with active tuberculosis (TB) last week.

The employee, who works in concessions and is in a position where there is no contact with visitors, is recovering in a medical facility.

The SWUPHD and NPS have indicated that they believe there is no risk to the public at this time. The park is still operating under it’s normal conditions and are encouraging visitors to still come to the park.

According to the American Lung Association it is not easy to become infected with TB as you generally have to be close enough to the person affected and for a long period of time.

Per their website, TB is an infectious disease that usually infects the lungs, but can attack almost any part of the body. It is spread from person to person through the air such as when a person infected with TB coughs, laughs, sneezes, sings, or even talks, the germs that cause TB may spread through the air.

TB needs to be treated by a healthcare provider who can  prescribe antibiotics. Leaving TB untreated can be fatal.
