WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Oct. 16, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have identified a 21-year-old woman killed after being hit by a car in West Valley City Monday morning.

The deceased is Kaitlynn Wicker, from West Valley City, according to WVCPD spokeswoman Roxeanne Vainuku.

Vainuku told Gephardt Daily that Wicker was trying to cross 4100 South at 5100 West at approximately 7 a.m. Vainuku said Wicker was crossing from the south side of the street to reach a bus stop on the north side of the street. The victim was not in a crosswalk, and it was still dark at the time of the incident.

Witnesses told police a couple of vehicles saw the victim and managed to swerve out of the way, when another vehicle came up from behind and, not seeing Wicker, hit her. The road has two lanes going east and two going west, plus a center turn lane, in that area, Vainuku said.

Wicker suffered “very significant injuries,”and was transported to an area hospital, where she died.

The driver remained at the scene, called authorities immediately after the incident, and is cooperating with police.

The crash remains under investigation, but Vainuku said at this time, there does not appear to be contributing factors other than the lack of visibility and the fact that the driver would not have expected a pedestrian to be in the road. She added the incident appears to be a “tragic accident.”

Gephardt Daily will have more on this developing story as information becomes available.
