West Valley City Police detectives investigating assault, shots-fired incidents

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, May 23, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — West Valley City police spent the early hours of Tuesday investigating two separate incidents, one of assault and a second of shots fired.

A news release from the West Valley City Police Department said at approximately 3:45 a.m. Tuesday, officers responded to an assault in a parking lot at 4643 S. 4000 West.

“Preliminary investigation indicates that the victim and the suspects exchanged looks and words, which then prompted a physical altercation,” the news release said. “The suspects damaged the victim’s vehicle to gain access to the victim, and assaulted the victim while he remained inside his car.”

Police at the scene told Gephardt Daily the victim was hit in the face with a brick.

“The suspects began to flee the scene, and in an attempt to stop them from doing so, the victim used his own vehicle to ram the suspect vehicle and disable it,” the news release says.

The suspects fled on foot, but were tracked by officers and taken into custody. Three male suspects, ages 14, 15 and 17, have been booked into juvenile detention on aggravated assault charges, and a female juvenile was questioned and released.

At about the same time, officers responded to a call in the area of 4300 S. 6000 West, on reports a suspect had fired multiple shots toward a home.

No one was hurt, however, property damage to the home was evident. Officers were able to locate a suspect and vehicle matching a provided description. Police officers arrested Hansley Tuitea, 35, and recovered a shotgun, believed to be the type of gun used in the shots-fired incident.

Tuitea was booked into jail on multiple felony charges of discharging of firearm.

The preliminary investigation indicates that the suspect in this case is acquainted with a resident of the home.
