WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah, Oct. 18, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The West Valley City Police Department is mourning the passing of retired K-9 officer Sam.

Sam began his career at WVCPD in July of 2009 as a dual purpose dog, working both narcotics and patrol, and worked with three different handlers, the department posted in a news release on Facebook.

“We had many happy days with Sam,” the news release said. “Sam also loved his job and he was good at it. During his career, he was responsible for finding several suspects and a whole lot of narcotics. Sam also won several awards in K-9 competitions in Utah and Nevada.”

After Sam was retired from the WVCPD, he went to live on a large farm with Officer Shaun Vargo.

“Recently, Sam slowed down,” the news release said. “The body that had served him so well for so many years became painful and tender with arthritis and his family had to say their final goodbyes. Rest In Peace, K-9 Sam and thank you for all of your years of service. May your body be strong and pain free once again as you run across the rainbow bridge.”
