14-Year-Old Girl Mistakenly Taken From Mexico to Texas Returned

GUANAJUATO, Mexico, April 23 (UPI) — A 14-year-old girl was returned to Mexico after authorities seized and sent her to Texas without properly identifying her in a case of mistaken identity.

Alondra Luna Nuñez was taken by Mexican authorities on Friday in the city of Guanajuato, Mexico, out of her middle school. The incident of a frightened Alondra desperately trying to free herself from police was recorded and went viral online.

Mexican authorities acted on a claim that Dorotea García in Houston said her daughter was illegally taken from her by her daughter’s biological father to Mexico without her permission. García said she recently traveled to Guanajuato and saw her daughter there.

“Derived on this information… and in compliance with international law… the judge in charge of the case asked Interpol to intervene to make the girl appear at a hearing in which the court would confirm her identity,” a statement by the Mexican Foreign Ministry said.

Police took Alondra mistakenly and sent her to the United States. A DNA examination was only carried out after Alondra arrived to Houston on Wednesday. She was sent back to Mexico after the mistake was realized.

“I will have my girl at home. We hope she’s OK. We are taking action on the matter,” Susana Nuñez, Alondra’s mother said. “They stole my child.” The family may take legal action against authorities.
