Nov. 26 (UPI) — At least two people were killed following an explosion near a Chinese port city on Sunday.

The explosion took place at 8:50 a.m. at the site of a factory set to be demolished in the city of Ningbo in eastern China’s Zhejiang province.

At least two people were seriously injured and 16 more sustained minor injuries as the blast caused buildings in the area to collapse.

Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the explosion, but the municipal gas company said there was no gas pipeline near the explosion site.

Firefighters discovered a pothole at the site, believed to be the source of the explosion. Villagers said there was previously a toilet in that spot and investigators confirmed there was a septic tank in the area.

The explosion took place in Lijia village which is home to 2,000 migrant workers and 700 permanent residents.

There were no residents at the site of the explosion, but houses in surrounding residential areas were affected by the blast.
