WASHINGTON, D.C., Oct. 28, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — FBI Director James Comey said on Friday the bureau is reviewing new emails connected to Hillary Clinton’s time as Secretary of State, according to a letter sent to eight congressional committee chairmen.

The announcement comes just 11 days before the presidential election in which Democrat Clinton faces GOP candidate Donald Trump.

In July, Comey recommended the Department of Justice not press charges against Clinton.

In the new letter, Comey said that “recent developments” compelled him to take another look.

“In connection with an unrelated case, the FBI has learned of the existence of emails that appear pertinent to the investigation,” Comey wrote.

“I am writing to inform you that the investigative team briefed me on this yesterday, and I agreed that the FBI should take appropriate investigative steps designed to allow investigators to review these emails to determine whether they contain classified information, as well as to assess their importance to our investigation.”

Comey earlier had characterized Clinton’s email practices as “extremely careless.”
In the letter that came to light on Friday, Comey said he did not know how long the new review would take, and that the FBI “cannot yet assess whether or not this material may be significant.”
The New York Times reported the emails were uncovered as part of an unrelated investigation into former Rep. Anthony Weiner‘s sexting with women. Weiner was married to Clinton’s close aide Huma Abedin.
NBC reported the emails were not found on Clinton’s server and were not believed to be withheld by Clinton’s legal team when they turned over all emails on the server they said were relevant to her job as secretary of state.
