Aug. 10 (UPI) — A double-decker bus crashed into a shop in south London on Thursday, injuring several people, authorities said.
Police and emergency pesonnel were called to the incident at London’s Battersea district at about 7 a.m. Thursday, where the bus crashed into the Poggenpohl Kitchen Design Center on the Lavender Hill road.
The driver of the bus was hospitalized and two female passengers became trapped on the bus’ upper deck until they were rescued by paramedics. The London Fire Brigade said 15 passengers were able to get off the bus before emergency crews arrived.
“This was a challenging incident in the early stages but crews worked hard to stabilize the shop and assist casualties alongside London Ambulance Service colleagues,” LFB Station Manager Ben King said in a statement. “The incident also involved some complex cutting to gain access to the upper deck of the bus so we could reach the two passengers who were trapped before lowering them to safety using an aerial ladder platform.”
The London Ambulance service said it treated 10 patients — three of whom were hospitalized — following the collision.
The cause of the crash is under investigation. The incident disrupted traffic and authorities advised motorists to avoid the area.
