May 13 (UPI) — At least 23 people, mostly women and children, died in the Turkish resort town of Marmaris when a bus headed to a Mother’s Day event careened off a cliff, authorities said.

Another 11 passengers were severely injured in the crash. Most of the bus passengers were women, children and local tourists. Bus passengers were traveling to Marmaris to participate in a Mothers’ Day event, officials said.

“There were no foreign tourists inside it. The reason for the accident is being examined. According to the initial findings, a malfunction in the brakes took place, but the issue is being investigated,” Mugla Governor Amir Cicek said.
