Feb. 20 (UPI) — Russia’s Ministry of Defense on Monday confirmed a bombing killed four Russian military advisers and wounded two others in Syria.

The Russian Defense Ministry said Russian army doctors are trying to save the lives of the two injured servicemen. The men were traveling in a vehicle that was part of a Syrian Army convoy moving to the city of Homs from the Tiyas airfield.

A radio-controlled improvised explosive device detonated under the vehicle.

“On February 16, 2017, four Russian servicemen were killed in the Syrian Arab Republic as their vehicle hit a remote controlled bomb,” the Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement. “The Syrian troops’ vehicular column that included a vehicle with Russian military advisers was moving from the area of the Tiyas aerodrome towards the city of Homs.”

Russia backs the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the Syrian civil war. The United Nations estimates more than 400,000 people have died in the war.
