May 22 (UPI) — Afghanistan‘s Interior Ministry said gunmen killed a German charity worker and beheaded an Afghan guard after attacking a guesthouse in Kabul.

The Operation Mercy Swedish non-governmental organization also said a woman from Finland is missing. The Afghan ministry said the woman was possibly kidnapped. It is not clear who is responsible for the attack.

The NGO, based in Orebro, said “the residence of two Operation Mercy staff members was broken into” Saturday evening.

“One staff member, a German national, was killed along with her house guard, an Afghan national,” Operation Mercy said in a statement. “Another Operation Mercy staff member, a Finnish national, is missing. We will provide updates as more information becomes available. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families involved.”

The Afghan government faces the ongoing threat from the Taliban, as well as from the Islamic State.

The Taliban frequently launches attacks, generally targeting Afghan troops, international troops and government officials. In April, the Taliban launched an attack in which it killed more than 140 soldiers stationed at Camp Shaheen, which serves as a headquarters of the Afghan National Army.

Earlier this month, U.S. President Donald Trump‘s senior advisers said they have proposed sending additional troops to Afghanistan to weaken the Taliban in an effort to bring about negotiations.
