March 8 (UPI) — Indianapolis officials said four small wooden ramps were installed in the downtown canal to help ducklings escape the water without drowning.
The city said the ramps, made from wood and insulation, were installed near the Canal Street Apartments downtown after animal advocates said baby ducks and geese were dying because they were unable to make it over the high cement ledges around the canal.
The move received praise from animal groups, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.
“PETA thanks the city of Indianapolis for doing the right thing in striving to coexist with local wildlife,” the group said in a statement. “These ramps are a responsible and practical way for the city to make a world of difference for each duckling who will be able to escape drowning in the canal.”
