June 15 (UPI) — A Kansas City, Kan.-area sheriff’s deputy died and another sustained injuries Friday when a gunman shot them as they transported inmates to a courthouse, law enforcement officials said.

Both deputies of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office were transported to the University of Kansas Hospital after the shooting. The surviving officer was critically injured.

The suspect, who also was shot, was in surgery at the same hospital.

Wyandotte County Sheriff spokeswoman Kelli Bailiff said the shooting happened at the Wyandotte County Correctional and Court Services building in Kansas City.

“It is very possible that with their own firearm they were both shot,” she saidof the deputies at a news conference at the hospital.

Kansas City police spokesman Zac Blair said officers were speaking with witnesses about how the shooting happened.

“This is a courthouse building, there is video. We will be looking at that video,” he said.

KCKPD Chief Terry Zeigler said police were not looking for any other suspects.
