SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, (Jan. 4, 2016) — One hundred sixty Utahns will be losing their jobs in 2017 as the retail giant Macy’s has announced the shuttering of 68 outlets across the U.S., including two stores in the Beehive State.

Seventy-two workers at the Macy’s in the Layton Hills will be getting the heave-ho by year’s end, along with another 88 associates at the Cottonwood Mall.

Ten thousand employees are being sacked nationwide.

Macy’s made the announcement in a Wednesday press release, titled “Macy’s, Inc. Announces Actions to Streamline Store Portfolio, Intensify Cost Efficiency Efforts and Execute Real Estate Strategy.”

“The closure of 68 stores and the reorganization of the field structure that supports the remaining stores, reinforcing the strategy of fewer stores with better customer experience,” the release said. “These store closures are part of the approximately 100 closings announced in August 2016.”

Declining sales at its brick and mortar outlets across the U.S. were cited as the reason behind the closings and layoffs.

The corporation claims the cutbacks will save $550 million, an undisclosed amount of which will be invested in China, along with expanded digital operations.

“Whether it is improving corporate agility, enhancing our customer engagement strategies, or continuing to capitalize on the potential value of our real estate assets, we remain focused on the actions that will ultimately improve our financial results and provide the greatest return for our shareholders,” Macy’s said.
