Dec. 19 (UPI) — At least 12 people were killed when a bus carrying passengers from two cruise ships crashed on a highway in Mexico on Tuesday.

Royal Caribbean cruise line confirmed 27 of its guests were on a bus tour of the Chacchoben Ruins in the Mexican state of Quintana Roo at the time of the crash.

Seven Americans and two Swedish citizens are among the nearly two dozen injured, Vincente Martin, civil defense spokesman for Quintana Roo state, said. He added authorities were not able to determine the nationalities of the dead.

Aside from the driver and a tour guide, the bus only carried tourists.

Cruise spokesman Owen Torres told ABC News the bus was carrying guests from Royal Caribbean’s Celebrity Equinox and Serenade of the Seas.

“The news from Costa Maya about a bus accident involving our guests is heartbreaking,” Torres said. “Our hearts go out to all those involved. We are doing all we can to care for our guests, including assisting with medical care and transportation.”

Royal Caribbean said it is working with local authorities to learn more about the incident.
