Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata Dies At 55

KYOTO, Japan, July 13 (UPI) — Satoru Iwata, the CEO of Nintendol died on Saturday at the age of 55 after battling cancer for over a year.

The gaming company released information about his death in a statement and revealed that he suffered from a bile duct growth.

As the company’s fourth president, Iwata played a pivotal role in the growth of various franchises like Pokemon and Super Mario. He oversaw the launch of the Wii console system, the handheld Nintendo DS and the Amiibo interactive figurines, TIME reports.

In June 2000, Iwata was appointed as director, in May 2002 he was promoted to president and representative director and since June 2013 he was the CEO of Nintendo of America.

In his last interview with American media, Iwata told TIME about his plans to introduce the company’s popular characters like, Mario and Donkey Kong, to smartphones and tablets.

His replacement has not yet been announced, but Shigeru Miyamaoto and Genyo Takeda will remain as the leaders of the company for the time being.
