Oct. 10 (UPI) — Playtex recalled 5.5 million plastic plates and bowls for children in the United States and Canada because of a choking hazard.

The recall was jointly announced by Playtex parent organization Edgewell Personal Care, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Canadian government.

About 3.6 million units have been distributed in the United States and the rest in Canada since October 2009. They were sold until August in Babies R Us, Target, Amazon and other stores.

The company, based in Chesterfield, Mo., said a clear plastic coating can peel or bubble from the surface of the plates or bowls.

No serious injuries have been reported but the company said it knows of 11 instances where that plastic was found in children’s mouths and four instances of children choking on the product. Also, there have been 372 instances of the layer bubbling or peeling.

The plates’ designs include cars, construction scenes, giraffes, princesses and superheroes. The white polypropylene plates and bowls have a colored rim on top and a non-slip bottom.

The products were sold separately and in sets.

No other products have been recalled.

Consumers are urged to immediately stop using the recalled plates and bowls. Consumers should contact Playtex for a full refund by calling 888-220-2075 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT from Monday through Friday or online at www.playtexplatesandbowls.com/.

In 2015, Energizer Holdings, Inc. became Edgewell Personal Care when the battery business was spun off in 2015. Its 25 brands include Playtex, Schick razors, Hawaiian Tropic sun care, Carefree feminine products and Little Genie cat litter disposal system.
