San Diego police officer shot, killed in line of duty; second officer wounded

SAN DIEGO, Calif., July 29, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — One of two San Diego police officers shot late Thursday night has died, while a second remains in critical condition.

“It is with a very sad heart we announce the death of one of our officers tonight. Pray for his family,” the San Diego Police Department announced on social media.

“We have a second officer in surgery. Keep him in your prayers.”

The officers, identified as members of the police department’s elite gang unit, were shot at about 11 p.m. while attempting a traffic stop in San Diego’s Southcrest area.

Residents of a several block radius were ordered to stay in their homes while police searched for the neighborhood for gunman overnight.

One possible suspect was taken into custody and is being questioned by police. His role in the shooting — if any — remains under investigation.

Gephardt Daily is monitoring the situation and will update this story as information becomes available.
