SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Sept. 10, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Utah Gov. Gary R. Herbert has authorized the lowering of United States and Utah state flags on Sunday in observance of the 15th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks.

Nearly 3,000 people perished in the 2001 terror attack on New York City’s Twin Towers. The month after the incident, a bill was passed to designate each Sept. 11 as Patriot Day.

Herbert issued the following statement:

“September 11, 2001 was one of the darkest days in the history of this country. Many innocent lives were lost and countless others were forever changed, yet an unprecedented spirit of service emerged and brought with it great healing for our nation.

“As we observe the fifteenth anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks, Jeanette and I request that all Utahns seek to perform acts of kindness as a mark of respect and remembrance. We also extend our deep appreciation to the service members who continue to defend our freedoms and fight terrorism at home and abroad.”

Flags will be flown at half-staff at all state facilities from sunrise to sunset on Sunday.
