LADYSMITH, Wis., Oct. 30 (UPI) — A western Wisconsin sheriff’s deputy was shot dead Saturday night after responding to a call of a suspicious vehicle. A suspect is in custody.
Rusk County Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Glaze, was fatally shot about 11 p.m.
Glaze, 33, radioed the sheriff’s department after he found the suspect vehicle in a field near Ladysmith, Wis. But dispatch lost contact with him. When backup arrived, they found Glaze dead, the sheriff’s office said.
Doug Nitek, 43, allegedly shot at deputies before surrendering, minnessota.cbslocal.com reported.
Nitek was arrested and remains in jail, awaiting formal charges.
“The Rusk County Sheriff’s Department wishes to thank everyone, especially all the local law enforcement that assisted them during this tragedy,” the department said in a press release.
“Please keep the family of the fallen officer and the men and women of the Rusk County Sheriff’s Department in your prayers.”
Authorities did not release how they discovered Nitek may have been involved in the deputy’s killing.
