UTAH COUNTY, Utah, Sept. 30, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Tests of Utah Lake’s Lindon Marina have found high levels of E. coli, and state officials have posted signs to warn visitors to the recreational area.

Test samples taken last Friday show a percentage E. coli that exceeds acceptable levels, according to the Utah Division of Water Quality. Additional tests taken Monday and Wednesday at the dike on the north side of the Lindon Marina showed levels were still high. A temporary advisory is in effect.

Posted signs advise people not to swim, wade or ingest water. Instructions suggest that visitors wash their hands after touching water or fish from the lake.

E. coli comes from human and animal waste. Pollution of all kinds, including E. coli, are typically higher after rainstorms due to urban runoff.

Some strains of E. coli some can cause diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and other infections. Some infections are very mild, but others are severe or even life-threatening. More information on the health effects of E. coli can be found at the Center for Disease Control and Prevention.
