SYRACUSE, Utah, May 18, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — A vehicle heading west on 17th Street veered across traffic lanes at about 2 a.m. Friday, and slammed into a fire hydrant, which sent water flooding the area.

Detective Erin Behm, Syracuse Police Department, said a man and a woman were westbound when they crossed over the eastbound lanes and hit the hydrant at about 900 West.

The damaged fire hydrant spewed water for about 30 minutes before it could be shut off, Behm said. A nearby Verizon cellphone store sustained some water damage, but the extent and cost estimate of damage were not known.

Behm said impairment was not a factor in the crash.

Driver Dakota Madsen, 18, and passenger Shelby Case, 19, were questioned after officers found drugs and drug-distribution supplies at the scene.

According to probable cause statements, both were read their Miranda Rights, and waived them. They each told officers that they bought illegal drugs and sold them at a profit to make money, and understood that was illegal, the statements say.

Madsen and Case were each charged with:

  • Offering or arranging to distribute controlled substances, a third-degree felony
  • Possession of controlled substances — marijuana/spice, a class B misdemeanor
  • Use or possession of drug paraphernalia, a class B misdemeanor

Madsen and Case were booked into the Davis County Jail, and were later released on bail.
