SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, July 28, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Two men ended up in the hospital early Friday morning, and police are working to figure out if the people they have in custody are witnesses or possible suspects.

Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Cracroft said a call came in at about 12:30 a.m. of shots fired and a man down in the grass at 800 W. North Temple.

When officers arrived, they found a man on the ground. He had been shot and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center in very critical condition. It wasn’t immediately known if he was expected to survive.

Cracroft said another person also had been injured and went to LDS Hospital in a private car.

“For whatever reason,” Cracroft said, “they weren’t happy treating him at LDS, so he was transported to IMC.”

The second man had possibly been stabbed multiple times.

Information was scant because police had yet to locate any good witnesses.

“A man was running away, and officers found him,” Cracroft said. “He’s probably a witness, but he’s not giving us a straight story. But we don’t believe he’s a suspect.”

Police took that man into custody. Cracroft said there were quite a few people in the area and he is “pretty sure they know something” about whatever transpired. Police were still trying to determine if the shooting and stabbing were related or separate incidents.

“Detectives are en route,” he said, “and everything is secured for them.”

Gephardt Daily will update this developing story as more information becomes available.
