SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, June 22, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Three young children and at least one adult were injured in a two-car collision shortly before 9 p.m. Thursday in the area of 998 S. Redwood Road.

Lt. Dave Cracroft, of the Salt Lake City Police Department, said the crash occurred when a Ford pulled out of a driveway onto Redwood Road and then either slowed or stopped across the southbound lane of traffic.

“An older Lexus that was southbound T-boned the Ford,” Cracroft said. “Unfortunately, there were three kids under 5 years old in the Ford. One was in ‘delta’ (extremely critical) condition at the scene, and two were ‘charlie’ (very serious). All three were transported to Primary Children’s.”

Cracroft said the conditions of all three children have since been upgraded, and the child who was most seriously hurt — a little girl — is expected to recover from her injuries.

The driver of the Ford had minor injuries and was transported to Intermountain Medical Center. Cracroft said it was “looking pretty good” for the driver, considering the impact of the collision.

The two men who were the only occupants of the Lexus had some injuries, but opted not to go to the hospital.

Jama Abdi, a witness to the crash, described it as “horrible.” He told Gephardt Daily that he and another man ran to the vehicles to check on all the occupants. When he checked the smallest child’s pulse, “it was very weak.”  He said she was unconscious the whole time.

Emergency crews responded quickly to stabilize the children and get them to the hospital, Cracroft said. He said the crash was still under investigation and that, because of the initial severity of the injuries, the Crash Analysis Reconstruction Team was called to the site.

CART was still at the scene at 11:15 p.m. No information was available as to who, or whether anyone, would be cited in the crash.
