BENJAMIN, Utah, March 24, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office sergeant and another man have been found shot dead in what officials are calling an apparent murder-suicide at a home in Benjamin, near Spanish Fork.

Officials identified the men as Chad Elwood Conrad, 42, a sergeant who worked in Corrections with the Salt Lake County Sheriff’s Office, and Damon Brian Bushman, 23, who is Conrad’s nephew.  Both men lived in the home.

According to a news release from Sgt. Spencer Cannon, spokesman for the Utah County Sheriff’s Office, at 12:42 p.m. Friday, March 24, deputies with the Utah County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a suicide near 7600 South 1800 West, just west of Interstate 15, in Utah County near Spanish Fork.

A family member discovered Conrad’s body in a bedroom of his home. He apparently had been shot while he was asleep.

Bushman was found outside the residence, also dead of a gunshot wound, which officials believe was self-inflicted, according to sheriff’s spokesman Cannon.

Cannon tweeted at about 3 p.m. that the two men had been discovered deceased.

Salt Lake County Sheriff James Winder, who held a news conference with Cannon, said the delay in releasing more details was to provide time for Conrad’s coworkers to be notified. Conrad had been scheduled to work the late shift today.

Winder called Conrad “a man dedicated to his profession, who served his community very well.”

“There’s been a tragedy here today,” he said.

Gephardt Daily will have additional details as they become available.
