SEVIER COUNTY, Utah, Feb. 17, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — An elderly man is dead after a house fire on Saturday in Sevier County.

Emergency crews were called to the residence, at 2330 East and 1700 North, at 4:30 a.m.

“Eighty-five-year-old Owen Kay Reynolds died in the fire,” says a statement released by the Sevier County Sheriff’s Office, which responded along with the county’s EMTs and the Richfield Fire Department.

“His wife was able to get out of the house and was taken to Sevier Valley Hospital for treatment. The fire started in a bedroom where Owen was sleeping. The cause of the fire is undetermined at this time, and the Utah fire Marshall’s Office is investigating the cause.”

According to the statement, 61-year-old Linda was awakened just before 4 a.m. by her husband, who was yelling for her to get the fire extinguisher and bring it to his bedroom.

“She grabbed a fire extinguisher from the kitchen and ran to Kay’s bedroom,” the statement says. “She pulled the pin but when she depressed the lever on the extinguisher nothing happened. She then tried to get into the bedroom to get Owen but it was too hot and she could not see anything due to the smoke and flames. She then ran to her phone and dialed 911.”

Firefighters had to knock down active flames before they could get to the bedroom to locate Owen Kay Reynolds.

“Owen was taken to Sevier Valley Hospital where he was pronounced dead. The medical examiner was called to investigate the cause of death and an autopsy will be performed.”

Officials say the fire started in the bedroom. The Red Cross has been contacted to assist Linda Reynolds.
