Flash floods, heavy winds forecast for Thursday in Utah

UTAH, Sept. 22, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — The National Weather service has issued flash flood warnings, flood warnings and watches, and wind advisories for multiple Utah counties on Thursday, with most to remain in effect until 10:15 p.m.

Some higher elevations could even get snow overnight, the notice said:

“A major early fall storm will move into the area today, bringing heavy rain, thunderstorms, strong winds, lowering snow levels, and much colder temperatures. Areas of flooding will continue across southern and southeastern Utah. Strong thunderstorms will develop by this afternoon across much of the area, especially central Utah, capable of heavy rain and strong winds.

“Gusty southerly winds are expected today across western Utah. Snow levels will lower tonight, with snow as low as 7,000 feet, and significant accumulations possible down to 8,000 feet. Lastly, much cooler temperatures are expected across all of Utah and southwest Wyoming by Friday.”

As of early Thursday afternoon, the following notices were applied to the counties and areas listed:

Flash flood warning: Garfield, Wayne

Flood warnings: Carbon, Duchesne, Emery, Garfield, Iron, Kane, San Juan, Sanpete, Sevier, Summit, Utah, Wasatch, Washington, Wayne, Uintah

Flash flood watch: Castle Country, including Price, Castle Dale and Emery; San Rafael Swell, including Green River and Hanksville; Dixie and Zion National Park, including St. George and Santa Clara; South Central Utah, including Kanab and Escalante; Glen Canyon Recreation area/Lake Powell, including Bullfrog; and the southern mountains.

Wind advisory: Great Salt Lake Desert and mountains, including Wendover and Snowville; San Rafael Swell, including Green River and Hanksville; West Central Utah, including Delta and Filmore; Southwest Utah, including Cedar City and Milford; Dixie and Zion National Park, including St. George and Santa Clara; South Central Utah, including Kanab and Escalante; Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, including Bullfrog; and the southern mountains.
