Be ready for hazardous road conditions as winter arrives for real

Dec. 19, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Commuters and drivers planning to travel through the state are encouraged to be ready for difficult road conditions as storms move through the area starting late Wednesday.

The Utah Department of Transportation has issued a weather alert, stating that heavy snow across Central Utah along Interstates 15 and 70 will cause “significant travel impacts” late Wednesday through Thursday morning.

Northern Utah roads are expected to have snow and/or slush during the same time period.

Dangerous road conditions are likely to be off and on through the weekend, as storm systems move across the state.

The National Weather Service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for the western two-thirds of Utah and southwest Wyoming, cautioning that a cold storm system will hit northwest Utah early Wednesday and track southeast through Thursday.

According to the outlook, “The leading cold front will sweep southeast across the area Wednesday through Wednesday night. A brief period of heavy snow will exist along and behind the front, followed by areas of snow confined mainly to the higher terrain and along the I-15 and I-70 corridors in central and southwest Utah.”

The storm is expected to linger across southeast Utah on Thursday, with the potential for prolonged and significant snowfall across the central and southern mountains and along the I-15 and I-70 corridors.

Much colder temperatures are forecast through the end of the week, along with gusty winds.

Another very cold storm system is expected on the weekend, with some light snow and very cold temperatures.
