In a letter to U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy, R-S.C., the chairman of the select committee, Clinton’s lawyer said she is “ready and willing to testify” when required. The letter said she would testify once, not twice as Gowdy requested.

“Respectfully, there is no basis, logic, or precedent for such an unusual request,” attorney David Kendell said. “The secretary is fully prepared to stay for the duration of the Committee’s questions on the day she appears.”

Gowdy has yet to respond to the letter, but U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., urged him to “take yes for an answer and finally schedule the hearing.”

“Dragging out this process further into the presidential election season sacrifices any chance that the American people will see it as serious or legitimate,” Cummings said.

Clinton was secretary of state when when an attack on the U.S. diplomatic compound in Libya left four people dead, including U.S. Ambassador Christopher Stevens. Clinton has faced some criticism, specifically from Republicans, for security lapses at the consulate that allowed the attack.
