MURRAY, Utah, Oct. 26, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — The Murray Police Department has released a blurry surveillance photo of a murder suspect in hopes that someone may recognize the man or that a nearby business or residence may have captured a better image.

The suspect was photographed Wednesday evening, fleeing a scene where police believe he had just shot a man in the head. That caused the victim, seated in an idling car, to lurch forward and drive into rush-hour traffic on State Street, which resulted in a collision involving five more cars.

No one in those cars suffered serious injuries, police have said.

The victim was in a car outside Check City, at 98 E. 4500 South, and was shot at about 5:30 p.m. Wednesday. He was pronounced dead at a local hospital.

Investigators found evidence that the shooting was related to a drug deal, Officer Kenny Bass, Murray Police Department, said at the scene.

The department’s request to the public went out Thursday:

“Murray Detectives are requesting that people who own property in the area with surveillance equipment check their footage to see if anything suspicious can be seen,” the statement says. “If you have any information regarding this case, the suspect, or if you have surveillance footage please contact us at 801-840-4000 and reference case number 17C020322.”

Bass told Gephardt Daily that the shooter was a white man, about 5 feet 3 inches, possibly in his 20s, and was wearing khaki or gray pants, a knit cap and a puffy jacket at the time of the crime.

Bass said his understanding was that only one shot was fired.

Police are still trying to determine the name of the victim.
