MIDVALE, Utah, July 8, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Two people were rushed to the hospital with gunshot wounds early Saturday morning after multiple rounds were fired less than 1,000 feet from the scene of an earlier apartment fire.

Unified Police Watch Commander Lt. Manfred Lassig said the shooting incident, near 7800 South and 700 West, apparently was set off by an earlier confrontation between four individuals in a black Volkswagen bug and some people who were outside.

“Someone in the VW fired multiple rounds, hitting two of the people,” Lassig said.

Both of the victims were transported to Intermountain Medical Center, one in critical condition and the other in poor condition with a gunshot wound in the leg.

Lassig said it was his understanding that the injuries are not deemed life-threatening and both victims are expected to survive.

The gang unit was called to the scene to determine if the shooting is gang-related.

Both victims are male, Lassig said. He didn’t have their exact ages, but estimated they are in their “upper teens, early 20s.”

Asked about any possible connection to the Friday night fire that displaced 60 people at nearby Millcreek Apartments, Lassig said there is no indication that the fire and shooting are related.

“They’re two separate incidents,” he said.

Police are looking for the black VW bug and the four people who were in it at the time of the shooting, which Lassig characterized as a “drive-by.” He said witnesses are being cooperative and have given statements to the police.

Gephardt Daily will update this story as more information becomes available.
