BOUNTIFUL, Utah, July 20, 2018 (Gephardt Daily) — Surveillance video released Friday shows the adrenaline-charged seconds when armed robbers entered a pawn shop and the store’s clerk managed to fatally shoot one of them.
The May 4 attempted robbery at Bountiful Pawn and Sales, at 135 S. 500 West, began when two men came into the shop, and the first to enter immediately put a gun in the clerk’s face. The other started moving along the counters.
As the suspect pointing the gun turned briefly to close the door, the clerk saw his chance and quickly darted into a storeroom.
When the suspect with the gun charged after him, the clerk already had his own gun out and fatally shot the man, who was later identified as Kleydys Arbolaez-Hernandez, 40, of Denver. Arbolaez-Hernandez was wanted on warrants for robberies in Oklahoma, Colorado, and Texas.
The other suspect ran from the store, prompting an intense nationwide search after he was identified as Alexander Cutino Sanchez 30, who police said also had several warrants.
Sanchez — also known as Alexyanis Cutino Jimenez — was arrested May 25 in Houston, Texas.
On June 21, a federal grand jury charged Sanchez with 11 robberies and 11 counts of using, carrying and brandishing a firearm.
Besides the attempted robbery of Bountiful Pawn, Sanchez and his late partner were implicated in five robberies in West Valley City between January and May; three robberies in Salt Lake City in January and February; a robbery in West Jordan in February; and a robbery in Millcreek in March, according to information released by the Department of Justice.
Sanchez has been formally charged in those robberies.
If found guilty of all charges, Sanchez faces up to 20 years in federal prison for each of the 11 robbery charges.
For the weapons charges, he faces up to seven years in prison for the first conviction, and up to 25 years each for subsequent convictions.
Sanchez is a Cuban national, as was Arbolaez-Hernandez.
