OGDEN, Utah, Oct. 29, 2016 (Gephardt daily) — A Riverdale man on Friday was found guilty of murder in the September 2015 shooting death of Horacio Mendez Sanchez.

Luciano Gabriel Silva, 21, also was found guilty of three counts second-degree felonies in the case: two counts of obstructing justice and one of possession of a dangerous weapon by a restricted person.

The body of Sanchez was found Sept. 13, 2015, along the Riverdale Parkway Trail. Sanchez died from a bullet to the back of the head.

Silva has maintained that the shooting was accidental after he let Sanchez hold the illegal firearm. Silva claimed Sanchez used the gun to try and rob him, so the shooting was in self-defense.

Silva faces 20 years to life in prison for the murder conviction, and one to 15 years each for the other three guilty counts. His sentencing is scheduled for Dec. 7.
