SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, Dec. 29, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — A two-alarm fire at 402 N. Center St. early Friday sent one person to the hospital with “pretty severe” injuries and left a home extensively damaged.

Audra Sorensen, public information officer for Salt Lake City Fire Department, said the call came in at about 1 a.m. for an “unknown incident” that turned out to be a fire in a two-story residential structure.

Sorensen said one person was evacuated from the building and was transported to University of Utah Hospital.

“We don’t know the extent of the injuries of that individual,” she said, “but it looks like it’s pretty severe.”

Officials later said the injuries were serious, but not life-threatening.

There were reports on the scanner that someone had jumped from the building in an effort to escape the blaze, but Sorensen said she can’t confirm that.

“What we do know is there was only one individual in the home at the time, and that individual was the one who suffered some pretty serious injuries … smoke inhalation, and maybe some other injuries … we’re waiting to hear back from the hospital on that,” she said.

It took about 30 minutes to get the blaze under control and more than an hour to completely extinguish it. About 40 firefighters were on scene.

“Not all of them are fighting the fire, though,” Sorensen said. “They also provide medical support for potential victims and the other firefighters.”

No other buildings were evacuated, and none were affected by the blaze.

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and investigators were at the scene.

“We’ll probably be on fire watch through the night,” Sorensen said.
