May 11 (UPI) — A 14-year-old was arrested Friday for shooting a student at a high school north of Los Angeles, authorities said.

The student was shot in the arm but will make a full recovery, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department said.

Paramedics and firefighters arrived at Highland High School in Palmdale after reports of a gunman on campus around 7 a.m. The suspect, also a student at the school, was arrested a short time later.

“We are all concerned about the safety of our children,” Palmdale Schools Supt. Raul Maldonado said.

“All of the Palmdale Elementary Schools were put on lockdown.”

“I had all the kids run,” teacher Elizabeth Cramer said. “It was their faces. I think that’s what’s going to get to me. It was real fear.”

The lockdown was later lifted.

A rifle was found a “distance away” in the desert, officials said.

It wasn’t immediately clear how the boy obtained the weapon.
