LAS VEGAS, Nevada, Oct. 2, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — At least 2 people are dead and 24 wounded — 12 of them critically — after a mass shooting Sunday night at the Mandalay Bay Resort on the Las Vegas strip.

The initial casualty count came from a spokesperson at the University Medical Center.

Other sources are placing the casualty count considerably higher.

The Las Vegas Police Department announced by way of Twitter that they were responding to the scene at about 10:08 p.m. Pacific time.

Police dispatchers reported multiple casualties outside the complex as SWAT teams conducted a floor-by-floor sweep of the sprawling facility.

There were unconfirmed reports of other shots being fired along the Vegas strip, but police have been unable to verify those reports.

SWAT teams used an explosive charge to breach the door of a hotel room on the 32nd floor of Mandalay Bay and reported one suspect is down and in custody.

Thousands were attending a country music festival called the Route 91 Harvest outside Mandalay Bay when the crowd was raked by prolonged bursts of automatic weapons fire. Witnesses said the shots appeared to be being fired from an upper floor of the hotel.

Police report scores of people are hiding in various areas up and down the Strip.

Gephardt Daily is monitoring the situation. We’ll provide more information as it becomes available.
