KEARNS, Utah, Oct. 5, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police are investigating an officer-involved shooting in Kearns.

Lt. Brian Lohrke, of the Unified Police Department, told Gephardt Daily that one suspect is in serious condition after being shot in the shoulder by an officer.

The incident took place at about 3:30 p.m., and began in the area of 6200 South and 5800 West.

“We had an officer conduct a traffic stop on a person known to have outstanding warrants,” Lohrke said. “The vehicle also was occupied by the suspect’s wife and mother-in-law.”

The suspect tried to escape, Lohrke said.

“They struggled until the suspect’s wife got involved and jumped on the officer’s back, and the suspect was able to get away,” Lohrke said. “The suspect started running through fields and hopping fences.”

Other officers arrived, and began cutting off the suspect’s possible escape routes.

“A shot was fired, striking the suspect in the shoulder,” Lohrke said. “He collapsed, and officers were able to take him into custody.”

That happened in the area of 6150 S. Trowbridge Way, Lohrke said. The suspect was taken to a nearby hospital, where he remains, in serious condition.

Lohrke said the shooting will be investigated by another agency, the Salt Lake City Police Department, in keeping with officer-involved critical incident protocol.

Gephardt Daily will have more information on this developing story as it becomes available.
