OTTAWA, June 1 (UPI) — A vegan Canadian woman bought a lobster from a local grocery store in order to send it almost 900 miles away so it could be set free.

Christine Loughead of Ontario discovered the lobster, which she named Lobby Joe, at her local grocery store and documented her rescue effort on YouTube.

“We saw a lobster in the grocery store surrounded by the animals that had already lost their lives but he was still alive and we had to do something,” she wrote.

“We bought him for $20 and took him home and set up a tank. Then we tried to figure out how to return him to his home.”

Loughead learned that the lobster was likely from Nova Scotia and began searching for a mail service that was willing to ship live animals.

She then reached out to the Facebook group Vegans United where she found Beth Kent, who was willing to set the lobster free.

Loughead drove the lobster six hours to a UPS store in Winnipeg and paid $225 to have the lobster shipped.

The lobster was packaged in a styrofoam box filled with newspaper before being sent about 892 miles to Nova Scotia with Kent.

The video then shows Kent’s footage as she removed Lobby Joe from the box and released him into a small cove near the water to finally be free.
