Summit County says sorry for off-pitch anthem

COALVILLE, Utah, Aug. 9, 2017 (Gephardt Daily) — Summit County has issued a written apology to listeners after a “Star-Spangled Banner” singer at the county fair struck a sour note.

Well, more than just one.

Check out her rendition yourself by clicking the video player above. It was posted on YouTube by someone identified as Wild Child.

“Maybe next time take it easy on the drinks before you sing the National Anthem,” Wild Child wrote under the Aug. 6 post. “So disrespectful. I can’t believe the organizers let her finish.”

It seems Summit County got a few complaints from customers dissatisfied with the off-key Francis Scott Key anthem, according to a Aug. 7 Facebook post.

“Summit County wishes to express a sincere apology to anyone who attended the 2017 fair demolition derby and felt the performance of the national anthem did not meet reasonable expectations of decorum….

“We want you to know we are not ignoring you or your comments. It is our responsibility as Summit County government to uphold the value of respect for our country. Please use the rest of the 2017 Summit County Fair events to judge us on that standard.”

The singer, Jennie Lea, responded Tuesday on her Facebook page.

“In regards to Summit County Fair’s Demolition Derby of 2017, I would like to issue an apology for messing up The National Anthem so terribly,” Lea wrote.

“I am extremely embarrassed by my performance. I know it sounds absolutely horrific, terrifying, disgusting & disgraceful. I accept responsibility and would like to just move forward and make it right.”

In a long post, Lea wrote that she intended no disrespect. She spoke about the circumstances that brought her to the fair, and the reasons she felt unprepared.

“It was slow, terrible, and VERY VERY EMBARRASSING! I myself didn’t even want to continue. I just hope the world knows, I did try to do my best, but I was unprepared in the long haul.”
