CHARLESTON, S.C., June 17 (UPI) — Authorities are looking for a man who opened fire at a church in South Carolina Wednesday night and killed multiple people there, police said.

The shooting occurred at the Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston at around 9 p.m. local time, officials said. Police said there are multiple casualties, ABC 4 Charleston reported.

CNN cited an official source in the investigation as saying multiple people were killed in the attack, and that their bodies remained inside the church.

CBS News reported that the shooting occurred during a meeting Wednesday evening.

Police said they are still searching for the suspect — a 21-year-old white man with a slender build wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt, blue jeans and boots, Charleston police said.

A police helicopter circled over the scene of the shooting and medical personnel responded to the scene, some news media reported.

The FBI, State Law Enforcement Division, the coroner’s office and multiple police agencies have responded to the shooting, ABC 4’s report said.
