SALT LAKE CITY, Utah, May 16, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Firefighters responded to a fire at a chemical distribution facility in Salt Lake City early Monday morning.
The Salt Lake City Fire Department responded to a two-alarm structure fire just after 8 a.m. at Brenntag Pacific, located at 2334 W. Director’s Row.
All 15 employees who were at the business at the time of the fire had evacuated the building prior to the arrival of fire crews.
The fire extended into the building, but crews had the flames under control within 20 minutes of arrival, and completely extinguished shortly thereafter.
Jasen Asay, SLCFD spokesperson, said the fire originated in an add-on structure that is connected to the main building. This area is used primarily for the storage of empty plastic drums, which had been used to store various chemicals. Several drums, ranging in sizes from 55- to 500-gallon, were damaged during the fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
Due to a residual amount of chemicals in the drums, the water used to fight the fire became contaminated prior to going down the drains. All of the drains on site are contained, and business owners will work with the Salt Lake County Health Department to properly remove the water.
