TAYLORSVILLE, Utah, Sept. 18, 2016 (Gephardt Daily) — Police have made an arrest in a carjacking that took place Saturday in Taylorsville.
According to a Unified Police Department news release, shortly before 8 p.m. Saturday, a Ford F-150 was driving recklessly on Interstate 215. The truck exited at Redwood Road and crashed into the embankment right off the exit.
The male suspect got out of the truck and approached a black Dodge Durango that was nearby.
The suspect produced a firearm and ordered the occupants, a woman and three children, out of the Durango. The victims complied, and the suspect left in the Durango before UPD officers arrived.
An “Attempt to Locate” call was broadcast for the Durango. Salt Lake City police located the Durango in the area of North Temple and followed the vehicle, but they lost sight of it in the area of 400 South 400 West.
Metro Gang detectives worked through the night and, through their investigation, located the unoccupied Durango in the area of 1017 South 900 West, the release states.
A male suspect matching the description of the carjacking suspect was found at a nearby residence in Salt Lake City.
Detectives surrounded the house and called out the occupants. The suspect in the carjacking, 31-year-old David Lee Haehnel, complied and surrendered to detectives. Haehnel was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
